My great-grandmother’s sweets shop

My grandmother was born at a sweets shop in Shimizu-ci. My grandmother had already died when I was born. So my memory is only of my great-grandmother who lived almost until 100 years old. She was an arrogant shop owner but a distinguished person. She was born in the Edo period and she was a friend of “ShimizunoJirocho”(a well-known boss of a mafia in Shimizu who became a hero of a TV drama.)

The Japanese sweets shop is called “Kanseisha”. It traces its roots to Kyoto in middle age Japan. The founder is one of Chabouzu (a master of tea ceremony like Rikkyuu) and was influential it is said.

When I was a child, in summer vacations, I went to Shimizu and stayed at grand father’s house. Once I went to Shimizu, I stayed there almost one month. Then I could do a lot of things like going to beach, mountain, fishing, and going to Kanseisha.

When I visit Kanseisha, employees gave me whatever sweets I want and I ate a bunch of sweets. That was a dream for children. And I always help them make sweets.

I am proud of Kanseisha and this sweets shop is my good old memory.

These are the sweets that present Kanseisha makes. Very different from the old day’s sweets that I know. The fashions of some of the sweets are coined from TV characters.

Like time has changed, people’s taste has changed. So these fashions appeal to customers as of now.

Sometimes I wonder if they make authentic Japanese sweets.

But these sweets are really cute so many girls and women favor these.

To earn a living these kind of sweets are needed but I prefer old days.

But you should give it a try.

These sweets are really yummy and cute and photogenic.

These must be your nice memory in Japan.

Thank you.
